Saturday morning and we set off early for our many errands and things to do. One of which was starting allergy shots over at Garfield and 19. Ugg, how awful. Got allergy tested this week and was told I am allergic to everything. They told me I had to start with a long journey of immunotherapy, so here I am day one.
Near the clinic was a restaurant that Omar had heard about. Jimmy Dee’s in Clinton Township. They are supposed to be famous for their corned beef and have great reviews about some of their other items. He suggested last night, but I did not see anywhere on their menu they had alcohol. Seemed a better lunch stop.
We were both starving, so we headed over. The restaurant was not yet open and we began to start to see car after car pull in. Now that is indeed the sign of a good restaurant that has people lined up waiting to eat. We were sat right away and waited on by Donna. We were surprised to see a bar there. They had a full bar menu, even offering up a fully packed Bloody Mary, with a corned beef slider on top. Omar saw that they had Modelo Especiale. A Mexican beer that is both flavorful and light. 11 am was a bit early for me so I opted for lemon water.
Omar ordered a basic corned beef sandwich. If basic means loads of corned beef on two large slices of chewy, crispy rye bread and gooey Swiss cheese. Donna asked which type of sauce he would like, homemade thousand island, horseradish or spicy mustard, or, opt for all! That is exactly what he did. Paired with crispy onion rings, crumb coated verse battered, lending to a crispy coating that was not overly greasy along with large slices of fresh onion. They were probably some of the best onion rings we have had in a while.
I ordered a Reuben Supreme, along with “thin fries”. The menu said they had curly fries, “thin” fries AND french fries. She repeated “french fries” to which I simply said yes, like a dummy. I should have clarified. There is a huge difference to me between skinny fries, regular fries, steak fries or the “gasp” dreaded battered fries. She brought me standard fries and shame on me for not asking clearly. I still do not know if skinny fries were even an option. The fries were ok, nothing special, but honestly, when you have in your lineup a huge meat filled sandwich and delicious onion rings, the fries will always pale in comparison.
Both sandwiches were awesome. Ample mounds of corned beef, sliced thin with little to no fat sitting on top of a hearty rye, thick and chewy yet buttery and crispy as they pull it off the grill. The sandwiches were almost too big to eat. Omar was able to tackle his, while I came darn close. I would like to say I was proud of myself, but maybe in this case is not quite the right thing to be proud of. The thousand island was definitely made in house. It was really flavorful. The horseradish and spicy mustard did not disappoint.
We had a great lunch. We will go back for sure. It is a little bit of a hike for us, but as I will probably be out that way for shots for the next decade, I am sure we will get another chance. We recommend you try it as well. Drop us a note and let us know what you think!
