First, I need to apologize. We were not quite in blog mode yet, so we have no pictures and no video, but we wanted to write a review.
It was a chilly August night, unusually windy and cool for summer. We wanted to go out to eat and planned to go to Hook in St. Clair Shores off Jefferson. Hook is the revamped Brownies on the Water. Brownies closed and Hook opened in its place. They still have the outdoor bar and eating area, and still have live music. You can sit and eat and watch the boats and yachts come and go. It is a nice place and casual, yet classy, ambiance in the restaurant. We wanted to go to Hook as I was still in the starting phase of my wellness journey and had limited things I could eat. Hook seemed to have a number of things on the menu that would work. We did make reservations here as well, done through the website. Upon arriving, we were seated right away. We were sat at a table in the middle of the floor and asked if we could have a window seat instead. They told us we could not sit by the window as “it wouldn’t be fair to the waitstaff” as I guess the person taking care of the window area had more tables. I don’t feel like we should not be able to sit in a better seat just because they want all waitstaff to have the same number of tables. Our waitress came over, and although she was very friendly, she had some terribly long painted fingernails that did not seem appropriate for someone handling food.
Omar ordered a martini again, and once again, without anchovies. He was a bit disappointed. I opted for just soda water, with cranberry to continue my alcohol hiatus. We ordered Chef Bobby’s Signature Wagyu Bone Marrow for an appetizer. This is a split bone with roasted marrow, prime tenderloin tips, mushrooms, blistered tomatoes in a zip sauce, served with crostini for the marrow. I left the marrow for Omar and mostly dived into the tips, which were tender and well-seasoned. Omar said the marrow was rich and creamy, and enjoyed it spread on the crostini. As I have been eating so much less, I was already getting full.
For dinner, I ordered the Davis Salad with Salmon. Basically, mixed greens with blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, cashews (which I ordered without as it was still on my “no eat” list) and poppyseed dressing. Topped with a fried goat’s cheese croquette, which if you like goat cheese you would love. We did not, so it went uneaten. The salmon was cooked very well, with crispy skin, still tender and juicy. The salad was huge. Way too much for me to eat, so I took most home. The salad was pretty decent and filling for sure.
Omar ordered oysters, which he said were good, but paled in comparison to Eddie V’s. He mostly ate the beef tips, marrow and oysters and enjoyed the bread. The bread was so tempting to cheat with. It was a beautiful, hot loaf of sourdough bread, fresh out of the oven, with garlic butter that just soaked into the warm, crusty bread. So tempting!
We have been to Hook before and were impressed enough to go back. We would recommend this restaurant, especially during the summer when you can enjoy some music. The band was setting up as we were leaving and we would have stayed and enjoyed them if not for two reasons, one, I was not drinking, and two it was chilly out! Even chillier by the water. Feel confident in going to Hook. Enjoy the boats, the drinks and the food, and if it is a nice summer’s day, enjoy the music.
